Rocroi (7 km)
This fortified town is virtually one of a kind, as Rocroi is the only European town - with Italy's Palma Nova - to have preserved its original concentric buildings in the shape of a "petrified starfish.
Ten streets fan out like the points of a star from a central square, allowing the men of the garrison to move super-fast to their posts.
Rocroi was built in 1555, under Henry II, as a counterweight to the nearby fortress of Charlemont, and surrounded by impressive defensive walls with five bastions.
Vauban made very few changes in 1675, and the original layout reflects a bold architectural style that had come over from Italy during the Renaissance.
Rocroi remained a garrison town until 1889.
